Depending on what I am reading to my boys,
I always find an opportunity to tickle them. A chorus in The Three Little Pigs goes . . . "not by the hair of my chinny chin chin." I use this chorus as an opportunity to tickle under their chins and they dissolve into laughter. My oldest boy always says, "do it again, do it again!"A line from Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball by Vickie Churchill goes . . . "poke out my tongue and make all kinds of funny faces." This is a great opportunity for us to make all kinds of funny faces. Do you know of a child who can resist making funny faces? When we read Goldilocks and the Three Bears, I use a gruff voice for Papa Bear, a regular voice for Mama Bear, and a baby voice for Baby Bear. Using different voices really helps bring the story alive to children. I love to read, Eyes Nose, Fingers and Toes: A First Book All About You by Judy Hindley because it is a great book in which to play act. A line in the book goes, "Arms go reaching way out wide. Arms can rock you side to side," and I get my son to act out the words with me. When I read Choo Choo The Runaway Engine by Virginia Lee Burton we get to make all kinds of sound effects from the train whistle to the noisy brakes to the sound of the engine chugging down the train tracks. My son loves trains and although this book is very old and in black and white, he can't get enough of it. It just goes to show you that you never know what book may interest your child. My kids and I have a great time reading In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming because the words she uses come alive as you read them . . . "zip, zap, tongues snap." The words themselves sometimes create their own sound effects. Do you see why I love reading aloud to children?
