A baby bird hatches out of his egg while his mother is searching for food. So, the baby bird decides to look for his mother. He meets a kitten, a hen, a dog, a cow, an old car, a boat, a plane, and a steam shovel and in turn asks each of them, "Are you my mother?" The steam shovel which the confused baby bird refers to as "Snort" returns the baby bird to his nest where he is finally reunited with his mother.

Eastman created another classic in this book that makes effective use of repetition using only 100 different words. He paints his simple, story around the loving relationship between a mother and a son, and uses common and favorite objects such as farm animals and transportation items to maintain the interest of children.
